With less than a week until the June 8th primary, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn has rolled out a TV ad in support of her bid to win the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.

Titled “Janice Hahn Carries on the Fight,” the ad reminisces about her father — the late Los Angeles County supervisor Kenny Hahn — and prominently features Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who the elder Hahn greeted at Los Angeles International Airport in the early 1960s.

As we mentioned in a recent L.A. Weekly feature story, titled “Lieutenant Governor of Paper Clips,” the Hahn campaign, led by chief strategist Garry South, has been betting heavily that the councilwoman's last name will win her votes in Southern California and help her pull off an upset victory over the front-runner, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Newsom, though, has out-performed Hahn in fund raising, with $775,000 in the bank compared to Hahn's $315,000, the San Francisco Chronicle recently reported.

In the TV ad, Hahn also manages to take a swipe at Newsom, who has released a new commercial as well.

Without referring to her charismatic rival by name, an announcer in the ad says, “We can send another ambitious career politician to Sacramento. Or Janice Hahn — single mom, councilwoman, businesswoman, schoolteacher for lieutenant governor.”

Hahn will be termed out of her L.A. City Council office in 2014, so she probably has some “ambitions” to find another job in politics, too.
