Grammy-nominated jazz-pop singer/songwriter Jane Monheit plays at Vitello’s in Studio City on Friday and Saturday, so we chatted about what we can expect plus what 2020 has in store…

LA WEEKLY: When did you start singing and performing — how did you get started?

JANE MONHEIT: Birth!! I’ve literally never done anything else. I was an incredibly lucky kid; my family was completely supportive, and at that time (the ’80s/’90s) NY state had incredible music departments in its public schools. I started playing gigs in high school and never looked back.

Describe your style…

I live for the Great American Songbook. I honestly do. It’s my great privilege to uphold the history of these beautiful songs.

Career highlight so far?

For me, it always comes down to the people I’ve worked with. The beginning of my career was insane in that regard; I got to play with everyone. Ray Brown, Tommy Flanagan, legends that are now long gone. I think I’m proudest, though, of my work with Ivan Lins. My hero worship is real.

What can we expect from this gig in Studio City?

Fantastic band; a rare hit with my husband Rick Montalbano on the drums. Still choosing the set list… definitely including some tunes we haven’t played in L.A. in ages. I love this club so much — we always
have such a great time.

What do you have planned for 2020?

I think it’s about time to make a new album.

Jane Monheim plays at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 3 and Saturday, January 4 at Feinstein’s at Vitello’s Superclub.
