Jan-Christopher Horak, director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive, discusses his new book, Saul Bass: Anatomy of Film Design, chronicling the life and career of the New York–born graphic designer and filmmaker. Bass got his start in Hollywood in the 1940s creating print advertisements, and went on to design title sequences for Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Billy Wilder for more than 40 years on such films as Psycho, Vertigo, North by Northwest, The Seven Year Itch and The Man With the Golden Arm. Bass collaborated with Martin Scorsese up until the ’90s on Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino. Horak also looks at the logos Bass created for Bell Telephone, AT&T, Quaker Oats and United Airlines, and his work as a director of mostly short films.
