27-Year-Old DUI Driver Arrested after Fatal Collision on Highway 53

LAKE COUNTY, CA (July 25, 2022) – A DUI crash along Highway 53 killed 43-year-old James Torrey Jr., early Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to the scene around 1:00 a.m., after a drunk driver struck a pedestrian on Highway 53.

Upon arrival, authorities located a Toyota Tacoma occupied by one person, and an unresponsive pedestrian in the roadway.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, paramedics pronounced the unresponsive pedestrian, identified as Torrey Jr., dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the driver of the Tacoma as 27-year-old James Nielsen. Following preliminary investigations, Lake County Officials arrested Nielsen on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Moreover, a large portion of the roadway was temporarily shutdown to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties. An active investigation is currently ongoing.
