Beginning Friday, the Nuart is showing a restored version of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg for a week in honor of the film's 50th anniversary. In this musical classic from director Jacques Demy, French megastar Catherine Deneuve plays Geneviève, an umbrella shop clerk, who falls in love with Guy, an auto mechanic. As part of the special opening weekend, actor George Chakiris (who starred with Deneuve in Demy's The Young Girls of Rochefort) will introduce the film at the 7:30 p.m. screening and discuss working with Demy, Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand. At Saturday's 7:30 p.m. screening, Patricia Ward Kelly – Gene Kelly's widow – will introduce the film. (Kelly also starred in The Young Girls of Rochefort.)

Saturday, March 16

In a double feature of not-your-typical romantic comedies, Cinefamily will screen Paul Mazursky's Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice plus Joe Swanberg's Drinking Buddies starting at 5 p.m. In the former, Bob (Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood) return from a retreat with a new perspective on their marriage and engage in extramarital affairs, after which they share the news with their friends Ted (Elliott Gould) and Alice (Dyan Cannon). In Drinking Buddies, two craft brewery co-workers (Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson) with a flirty friendship decide to go on a trip with their significant others (Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick), sparking an examination of their relationships. After the films, Mazursky and Swanberg will be present for a conversation.

Tuesday, March 18

Even if you haven't heard of the film, you certainly know its most famous song, “White Christmas.” Holiday Inn follows Jim (Bing Crosby), one-third of a song-and-dance act with Ted (Fred Astaire) and Lila (Virginia Dale), after he retires from show business to run a country inn. This 1942 classic starts at 1 p.m. at LACMA's Bing Theater.

Wednesday, March 19 

The Aero continues its ongoing “Best of Recent Belgian Cinema” series with Tenderness (La Tendresse) at 7:30 p.m. From writer-director Marion Hänsel comes this road-trip film in which a ski instructor fractures his foot in an accident and has to be driven home by his long-divorced parents. After the film, stick around for the Belgian beer reception
