The monthly Downtown Art Walk can be a little daunting, what with its scores of venues, packed sidewalks and somewhat overstimulating sensory chaos (think: parties, people watching and food trucks). Into this cultural fray sashays Allison “Hueman” Torneros, whose unique and ambitious solo project, RITUAL, opens during this month's Art Walk at Think Tank, the nearby Fashion District gallery and cooperative creative workspace warehouse. The sidewalk scene may be hyperactive, but Torneros' freehand, floor-to-ceiling, immersive mural environment gives it a run for its money. Normally one to eschew rigid planning, for this epic Torneros has indeed been preparing — but not by making sketches. She's been investigating the creative rituals of some favorite artists, dropping in at the studios and homes of her fellow painters as well as musicians, writers, dancers, photographers, actors and sculptors, in the name of investigating how they get into inspiration mode. What she learned during this “study of human behavior in the City of Angels” forms not only the context but the content of her own bigass ritual — bombarding the walls with pure vibrant color, stepping back, letting the painting reveal itself to her and attacking, freestyle.
