The gas leak at the Aliso Canyon Storage Facility, which lasted for 111 days, is officially over. At a press conference this morning, the California Department of Conservation announced that the leaking well, SS-25, has been cemented and permanently abandoned.

The announcement means that Porter Ranch residents who have been relocated to hotels now have eight days to return home. Some residents have urged an extension to 30 days, as they seek assurances that the air is safe to breathe.

The gas leak was first detected on Oct. 23. The Southern California Gas Company has estimated the response will cost at least $250 million to $300 million, not including climate mitigation or civil damages.
