It’s a WukiWorld and We Just Live in it

As he prepares to release his new album WukiWorld, talented Jersey electronic artist Wuki told us that he started producing when he was a teenager.

“I would just mess around on Reason and Fruity Loops [digital audio workstations], making beats, having fun, and rapping with my friends,” the man born Kris Barman says. “It started getting serious when my first project / band (Innerpartysystem) took off and we had to write a full length album. We were a hybrid of electronic and rock, so we would DJ at some after parties. I started out just DJing on Ableton, but I quickly realized learning CDJs would be very useful.”

Wuki says that his sound has evolved dramatically over the years.

“I can’t decide if it’s helped me or hurt me during my career,” he says. “I started out making night bass / breakbeat style tracks and then I kind of moved into trap. Now I pretty much make whatever I want as long as it’s fun and bouncy. My production style has become what I feel my sound is rather than a genre at this point.”

While he’s from New Jersey, Wuki has lived in Los Angeles and is now based in Denver. All, he says, have had an impact.

“Growing up on the East Coast made me love club music and more rap inspired dance music,” he says. “Now that I live in Denver, I see more people who definitely love the ‘heady’ music, so I think that has also influenced me a bit. I love to incorporate sounds from all over the world into my music, so each new destination I travel to becomes an inspirational moment for me.”

The debut album is WukiWorld and he says that he’s thrilled with the way it turns out.

“WukiWorld is going to be a showcase of all things Wuki,” he says. “Like I said, I’ve been all over the place genre wise, so I wanted to show my diversity as a producer with this album. It’s my first album and I’m excited to finally share it with the world.”

As for the rest of 2021, the producer says that he has a lot more music to drop.

“I definitely want to do a follow-up EP,” he says. “I also have a rap-focused EP I’m working on, so I want to get that out there too. Other than that hopefully playing shows by the end of 2021!”

Wuki’s debut album WukiWorld is out on March 12.
