The movement to require condoms for porn stars in L.A? It's a wrap.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa this week signed the rule into law: It requires that on-location porn productions permitted by the city ensure that condoms are used during “performances.”

Of course, as was pointed out to us, the city still doesn't require condoms at so-called on-site studio shoots. And enforcement is still up in the air. Nevertheless …

… the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which has been pushing for condoms in porn, is ecstatic. The group called Villaraigosa's signing a “historic move.”

And while we called this a wrap, the AHF is only just beginning. It wants to put a similar rule before countywide voters. That initiative would require condoms in the city and county, on-set and on-location.

And the group has been pushing for the state to come up with a specific rule requiring condoms in adult video as well.

The industry has resisted condoms and has threatened to leave L.A. over the city's new law, which should take effect in 90 days in about 42 days, according to what AHF tells the Weekly. Adult video's leaders say you, the porn consumer, won't buy condom smut. And they say the industry's once-a-month testing protocol for performers works.

A “working group” comprised of members of the city's Personnel Department, the City Attorney's office, the LAPD, and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health will try to figure out how to enforce this thing.

Good luck.
