They may be chubby and not much to look at, but ever since Flight of the Conchords retired and started winning Oscars, Tenacious D is the only great musical comedy duo we have left. A lot has changed since actor-singer Jack Black and singer-actor Kyle Gass sang about the devil, Dio and doing her gently on their 2001 eponymous debut: Ronnie James Dio went to that stadium in the sky; Black became a movie star and paved the way for other mustachioed, chubby comics (you're welcome, Galifianakis); and Gass, well, he stayed chubby. But after their 2006 sophomore flop The Pick of Destiny — or as Black himself calls it on the duo's new record, Rize of the Fenix, “a stinky pile of chee” — the two are back to making beautiful acoustic music about their sexual prowess, their friendship, roadies and aging groupies. And once again, they're backed by the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Filter bassist John Spiker and guitarist John Konesky, in addition to Bob Odenkirk and J.D. Ryznar, whom you may remember as the creator of the hilarious YouTube series Yacht Rock. So tonight, prepare for possible guest stars, but expect greatness. The Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd.; Tues., July 31, 7 p.m.; $61.50. (213) 388-1400, ticketmaster.com.
