45-Year-Old Twentynine Palms Woman Killed in Three-Vehicle Collision near Twisselman Road
BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 13, 2023) – Wednesday morning, a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 claimed the life of Itania Unutoataleni.
Officers responded to the collision on July 5th, at around 7:24 a.m., along the northbound Interstate 5, just north of Twisselman Road.
Upon arrival, the CHP learned that a 2008 International semi-truck was traveling behind a 2023 Dodge Caravan towing a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder.
According to the investigators, the truck driver failed to stop and hit the back of the Nissan. The impact sent the Nissan into the right shoulder and into the dirt embankment where it overturned. Police said the 45-year-old passenger of the Nissan was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
The truck then continued moving forward and rear-ended the Dodge Caravan.
Due to the impact of her injuries, the passenger that was ejected from the Nissan died from her injuries. The Kern County Coroner’s office later identified the deceased woman as 45-year-old Itania Unutoataleni of Twentynine Palms.
Additionally, the first responders rushed a 1-year-old toddler from the Nissan to Kern Medical for treatment of major injuries.
It was unclear if the drivers of the Dodge and the International truck sustained injuries.
At this time, the California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the multi-vehicle crash.
