26-Year-Old Driver Pronounced Dead after Wrong-Way Crash near Sweetwater

NOLAN COUNTY, TX (June 17, 2024)Israel Beltran died Wednesday morning and Lio Acero sustained injuries in a head-on crash on southbound State Highway 70.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:40 a.m., about six miles south of Sweetwater on June 5th.

Officers say Beltran was driving his 2024 Chevrolet Equinox northbound while Acero was heading south in a 2019 Ford F-150 pickup truck. For reasons yet unknown, 26-year-old Beltran veered into the oncoming lanes, resulting in a head-on collision with Acero.

Medics pronounced Beltran dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. Paramedics transported 62-year-old Lio Acosta Acero to Shannon Medical Center with serious injuries.

Preliminary investigations confirmed that both drivers were wearing seat belts. The exact factors leading to the collision are still under investigation.
