Just last month we told you about a poll that found a majority of California voters would support the full legalization of marijuana, a prospect that indeed will be put to a vote via a November ballot initiative. Now, however, it would appear that support for legalizing it is slipping.

A Public Policy Institute of California poll released late Wednesday finds that 49 percent of all adults in the state are opposed to such a law, with 48 percent in favor. Looking at “likely voters,” those numbers flipped to 49 percent in favor and 48 percent opposed. It looks like a dead heat.

Democrats (56 percent) and independents (55 percent) are much more in favor than Republicans (34 percent). About 62 percent of Latinos oppose the initiative, while 56 percent of whites favor it.

Those ages 18 to 34 favor it by 56 percent, those 55 and older could only muster 42 percent support.
