It's always a trial to get the little ones interested in fine art. Oh, you can try to convince the world that your precocious little pisher is the next Jackson Pollock, but you know in your heart that his random splatterings are just a god-awful mess. Quit messing with his chi. Or be clever and disguise an education in the arts at Norton Simon Museum's Family Fun Day, where a kid-friendly lecture and hands-on experience can go a long way. If the idea of learning about South and Southeast Asian art sounds as dull as doughnuts, the museum offers a new spin on its 1st to 18th century collection by coupling it with yoga. You'll view the art, hear the 411 by the museum educator and get a plainspoken talk about the yoga poses, mudras (symbolic hand positions) and symbolism found within the works. Yoginis ages 6 to 12 can try their first Down Dog under the tutelage of Greville Harwood, a professional yoga instructor and student of Tibetan Buddhism. Give it a try –you might find your family chanting all the way om.
