Eric Wareheim's foray into music video directing is marked by sequins, awkward dance moves and a few downright scary make-out sessions. One half of the team that brought you Adult Swim favorites Tom Goes to the Mayor and Tim and Eric, Awesome Show, Great Job!, his style is over-the-top, perhaps even ridiculous, but still manages to hit some cultural nerve. Fittingly, Wareheim is emerging as the Spike Jonze of the age, the go-to guy for any band looking for hip points. As you ask yourself when this director will take on a children's book, check out these highlights from his career.

Tommy Sparks “She's Got Me Dancing”

I like to think that Wareheim hosts 3 a.m. casting calls in the Del Taco parking lot on Santa Monica and Highland because that seems to be the only way you can explain the “Did I just see that or am I still drunk?” vibe of this Tommy Sparks video. An Amazonian warrior, dudes in bike shorts, glittery club kids? It sure looks like Saturday night in Hollywood.

Flying Lotus “Parisian Goldfish” (SFW clip)

Have you ever gone to a nightclub and seen a PDA so excruciating that you were tempted to gouge out your eyes with the needle of a turntable? This video almost recreates that moment, but with the addition of neon animation so that you will be less inclined to pull an Oedipus move on your eye sockets.

Depeche Mode “Hole to Feed”

Depeche Mode “Hole To Feed” from Eric Wareheim on Vimeo.

Some will argue that the band sequence in this video is redundant, considering Wareheim's MGMT clip for “The Youth.” That might be true to an extent, but this Depeche Mode video is crucial if for no other reason than it stirred a feverish debate amongst fans of the band (check out the comment section on our blog for some of the responses). Dudes, have you been to a Depeche Mode show lately? I have, and the make-out, gross-out scene is pretty close to what happens in the crowd during “Somebody.”

Major Lazer “Keep It Going Louder”

It's nice to think that perhaps there's some sort of political subtext to Wareheim's work. Maybe this video is a sly commentary on the portrayal of women in music videos. Or, maybe some of us just read too much into things.

The Bird and the Bee “Polite Dance Song”

The Bird and the Bee – Polite Dance Song from Eric Wareheim on Vimeo.

In this older, and considerably tame, video for L.A. duo The Bird and the Bee, you can see the beginnings of what would become Wareheim's signatures. There's the vaguely bored band, the uncomfortably dance scenes, even the disco lights and shiny outfits.
