Reports (like this one from Yahoo) indicate that AT&T has quietly revised upgrade eligibility dates to allow current customers to get a new handset at a discount on June 21 — the same day a new AT&T-enabled iPhone is rumored to be released.

Echo Park hipsters rejoice: The new iPhone, as previewed by the website Gizmodo, is nicer than the cool side of the pillow (which, of course, contains one Billy Dee Williams). AT&T puts most iPhone customers on two-year eligibility cycles for new handsets. Our own eligibility date remained the same. 🙁

While Apple has apparently employed authorities against the reporter who broke the story of the next iPhone, the company should realize that Gizmodo's coverage has only increased salivation for the gadget.

People across Los Angeles are checking their AT&T accounts right about … now.
