Last weekend, watercolor sunsets and skyline views shaped the backdrop on Naud St, where DTLA’s most eye-brow raising experience for technophiles takes place. It’s here, where the preferred dress code is black on black with carefully placed notes of obsidian, that techno heroes from the city and from the international scene perform on the same two stages. The event assembles on a gritty, graffiti embellished cement courtyard. With a sort of ominous flicker light bounced off costumes, a friendly disco ball and the magnificent “Broken Together,” which was the freshly polished chrome sculpture created by Michael Benisty. Secret Project is small enough for the sets to retain an intimate feel, but executed with enough largesse and production quality to bring in heavyweight names like Grammy-winning producer Four Tet, globally hailed duo Modeselektor, the deep bassy Russian dental sensation Nina Kraviz, and the full-fledged environmental scientist turned boss behind the decks, Jayda G

If that wasn’t enough to get locals excited, LA-based underground crews also were an important ingredient in the Secret recipe. For instance, Cooper Saver, was a fan favorite with a set that mirrored the reputation he’s earned with a fresh mixtape series and superior music curation at historic Far Away parties. From the Lights Down Low crew, undeniable stylings by the popular rave overlord Corey Sizemore and Papa Goth himself, Richie Panic were a welcome addition to the international lineup at Secret. The fiercely unapologetic undulations of Bears in Space and Goddollars also demonstrated the caliber of ‘passion, pleasure, and possibility’ that has become a hallmark at A Club Called Rhonda.
