Step aside, chicken soup. An Ohio-based ice cream maker has a sorbet to help with flu symptoms, ABC News reports.

Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams' Influenza Sorbet contains honey, ginger, cayenne pepper and orange and lemon juice. Oh, and Maker's Mark bourbon.

“My mother and grandmother made something very similar to that as a drink when I was a kid, even with the whiskey,” Jenni Britton Bauer, the company's founder and president, told ABC. “Whiskey, honey and lemon juice — that was our cough medicine, and they would thin it out and make it into a hot drink.”

Anticipating a bad flu season, she came up with the sorbet concoction in 2004. It also contains pectin, which coats the throat. The honey also lubricates the throat, and the cayenne pepper helps clear the nasal passages, she said. “This is our flu-season fix. It's proven to clear nasal passages, ease a sore throat, and soothe the body,” Bauer claims on her website.

The sorbet is more than just a home remedy — it is a tasty treat, she added.

“It is really delicious,” she told ABC. “The cayenne doesn't have flavor, it just has the kick, the physical property of the heat, and then all of the other ingredients are just so perfect together. You can just imagine it as a cocktail. A whiskey sour plus ginger.”

Jeni's Influenza Sorbet will be available through the peak of flu season — February and into March. It retails for $12 per pint and is sold locally as well as on the company's website (four pints required for an order, but you can choose other flavors, such as Riesling poached pear and cherry lambic).

It's not too late to get a flu shot, just FYI. The treatment may be delicious, but prevention is always better.
