FRIDAY, August 4

Can’t get enough Moog in your life? Today is for you. Downtown’s Grand Performances kicks off at noon with Moog Mania, a concert featuring “Moog magician” Arlan Schierbaum, dream-funk percussionist Marcus Joseph and their Mojo Triage, who bring more varieties of the synthesizer than Eskimos have words for “snow.” Later in the evening, everyone returns from the postconcert Moog study groups for a film on the Moogster himself, Robert Moog. Dress as your favorite member of Yes. California Plaza, 300 S. Grand Ave., downtown; Fri., Aug. 4, noon (concert) & 8 p.m. (film); free. (213) 687-2159.

SATURDAY, August 5

First off, a finger must be wagged at the organizers of Tiki Invasion. If your event includes a plea for people to bring a certain item so you can break the record of having the largest collection of these certain items, PLEASE SPELL THE CERTAIN ITEM CORRECTLY! It’s “u-k-u-l-e-l-e,” not “u-k-e-l-e-l-e.” Jeez. In what must surely be the longest and hottest event of the week, Tiki Invasion’s gates open at 8 a.m., with the first band starting at 10:45 a.m., and the music goes straight on until dark, followed by drive-in screenings of tropical cult classics Cobra Woman, Bug and Hard Ticket to Hawaii. Bands to get you asphalt surfing include the Muffs, the Woggles, Slacktone, the Martini Kings, Davie Allan & the Arrows, Couple and more. And don’t forget your ukulele. Mission Tiki Drive-In Theater, 4407 State St., Montclair; Sat., Aug. 5, gates 8 a.m., bands at 10:45 a.m.; movies at dark. (909) 627-3564.

SUNDAY, August 6

I believe that children are our future. Well, no shit! Take the little ones in your life — or borrow someone else’s — for the 21st Annual Children’s Festival of the Arts. It’s a free fest with Chinese dancers, Greggy Dee, the Bob Baker Marionettes, the Plaza de la Raza Folklorico Performing Ensemble, a giant drum circle, tons of craft making, plus the de rigueur face painting. Paramount Studios, 5555 Melrose Ave., Hollywood; Sun., Aug. 6, noon-4:30 p.m.; free. (323) 871-ARTS.

What? Standing around a hot studio lot with clammy, overexcited kids is not your idea of a perfect summer Sunday? Once again, American Cinematheque offers an escape into two mental movie margaritas: The first is Ski Party, with Frankie Avalon and Dwayne Hickman. James Brown and His Famous Flames do a blustery “I Feel Good,” and Leslie Gore sings “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows.” Also on the double bill is Surf Party, with Patricia Morrow, Bobby Vinton and Jackie DeShannon. Ah, summer. Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood; Sun., Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m.; $9. (323) 466-FILM.

MONDAY, August 7

L.A. isn’t the best town for seeing professional tennis, and if you weren’t lucky enough to get tickets for the recent Countrywide Classic at UCLA with Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick, you can still catch Maria Sharapova, Nadia Petrova, Elena Dementieva, and Venus and Serena Williams in the JPMorgan Chase Open Presented by Herbalife. Man, there were a lot of corporate plugs in that sentence. Here comes another one: Home Depot Center, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Carson; Aug. 7-13; $15.50-$100.50. (877) 234-8425.

TUESDAY, August 8

Who knew we needed a magazine dedicated to burlesque entertainment? Well, we do. Cute litte Shimmy mag hit the streets in February, and they’ve finally gotten together quite a celebration, dubbed Boom Shimmy Boom! With host Kitten on the Keys, there’ll be many hot numbers va-va-va-vooming around, including Princess Farhana, Penny Starr Jr., Miss Eva von Slut, Venus DeMille, Black Dahlia and more teasy tarts. Come for the articles, stay for the ads. (What the hell does that mean?) El Cid, 4212 Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake; Tues., Aug. 8, 10 p.m.; $10. (323) 668-0318.

WEDNESDAY, August 9

Great moments in spousal embarrassment. The year was 1996. Location: the Hollywood Bowl, for a special screening of The King and I. Husband sees and approaches famed movie critic Leonard Maltin and, without salutations, begins to express displeasure over Maltin’s two-and-a-half-star rating of National Lampoon’s Animal House. Obviously scared yet gracious, Maltin promises to look into the matter. As of press time, the rating hasn’t changed. ArcLight, 6360 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood; Wed., Aug. 9, 8 p.m.; $11. (323) 464-4226.

THURSDAY, August 10

How much cooler is the Santa Monica Pier than anywhere else in L.A.? Find out when Salif Keita takes the stage at the Twilight Dance Series (see Music Picks). No, sorry, you can’t live anywhere near this area. It’s all filled up, and you can’t afford it anyway. Even the Bubble Man lives in Canoga Park! Santa Monica Pier; Thurs., Aug. 10, 7:30 p.m.; free. (310) 458-8900.
