Ah, the plight of the so-called “anchor baby,” those children of illegal immigrants dropped on U.S. soil like a red-white-and-green flag (because we assume here that European, Asian, African and other immigrants don't do this).

They're a thorn in the side of some, and on Tuesday Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich released data Tuesday showing that children of the undocumented in Los Angeles County received $53 million in welfare.

The number includes $31 million in food stamps and $22 million from CalWORKs, he says.

Antonovich crunches the numbers and says this amounts to $1 of every $5 spent in such welfare in L.A. County. The $53 million is also $3 million above the same costs for 2009.

The sup:

“When you add this to $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year – not including the hundreds of millions of dollars for education.”

Of course, these are legal citizens whose heritage is parsed in the name of anti-illegal-immigrant fervor.
