Alex Kirst, the former drummer for wild LA rockers The Nymphs and a member of Iggy Pop's band was killed late Thursday, Jan. 13, in Cathedral City near Palm Springs. Local police are investigating the death as a hit and run.

“We have no evidence of any braking,” Sgt. Paul Herrera told The Desert Sun. “(The driver) made no attempt to stop and fled the scene.”

According to The Sun, police issued a plea for the public's help Friday in identifying the driver or the vehicle (which would have missing headlights) that hit Kirst.

Kirst (and brother Whitey Kirst, also a well known musician; he plays guitar for Iggy, Steve Jones and more) are Canadian natives with dual citizenship and both are well known in music circles of LA, having lived here for several years.

The Sun says Kirst was the sixth pedestrian killed along valley roadways in the last seven weeks. With Coachella coming up soon, problems of this nature in Palm Springs, where roads are often very dark, are definitely something to take note of. Coachella's message board already has a thread about the death. Iggy played the desert fest as a solo artist in 2003.

Josh Richman, popular club promoter and friend said of Kirst yesterday, “He was much beloved as a person and musician.”

Kirst was 47 years old.
