A city ID card for illegal immigrants?
Shouldn't the undocumented just, you know, stay undocumented — in the dark, underpaid and a permanent part of the underclass?
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says no. He wants city library “universal city services cards” to double as official IDs for those horrible folks who take care of our children, wash our cars and put salad in our bowls:

The matter will come before the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging Committee today.
The idea to revamp library cards, to make them into something more high-tech with the possibility of debit services for those who have a hard time getting bank accounts, originally came from Councilman Richard Alarcon.
Villaraigosa is proposing to take the idea further, to include identification (name, address, photo) even for those who cannot prove permanent residence, a move San Francisco has already taken.
Of course there are people opposed to it. How dare others exist! Out of sight, out of mind.
[Update at 11:35 p.m.]: KNX 1070 Newsradio reports that the committee approved the ID plan this morning. But it still faces hurdles, including the full L.A. City Council.
