The first time Reps. Howard Berman and Brad Sherman faced each other at the polls, back in June, it was not uncommon to hear voters lament that they had to choose between two fine public servants.

“What a shame that is,” Donald Sternberg told the L.A. Times back then. “I like them both; I'm sorry one of them may have to leave.”

You don't hear that sentiment so much any more, now that the two campaigns and various independent groups have spent $15 million scorching the earth.

“Berman or Sherman? I don't know. I wish I had a third choice,” voter Kimberly Wedding told the Times today. “I wish I was running for that job.”
Looks like whoever wins will return to Capitol Hill with a battered public image.
