Occupy L.A. is not gone, and not forgotten. Last Monday, thousands paid a visit to the port of Los Angeles. While Occupy Long Beach was due for an eviction, it turns out only one single cop showed up to tell the throngs they could stay. With change a-coming all over the planet — two million public workers recently walked off the job in the U.K., a country half the size of California, to protest potato-head PM Cameron's austerity measures — the majority of our protestors have little to no experience, and a little guidance would sure help. How 'bout if it was accompanied by a lovely organic meal and a cleansing winter solstice celebration? Join Reclaiming L.A. and Project Butterfly for an all-day empowerment pow wow, The Magic of Co-Creation: Building Power in Groups, a workshop that will utilize “the tools of magic, meditation, trance and ritual to explore issues of personal and social power” while looking at ways to “create nurturing and healing group structures [and] embrace constructive conflict.” Starhawk, the day's facilitator, draws on four decades' of experience working in purposeful groups, and her latest book, The Empowerment Manual, A Guide for Collaborative Groups, illustrates how to “foster connection, clear communication [and create] positive power.” Later, attendees will celebrate the longest night of the year with a Winter Solstice Ritual and Spiral Dance (Starhawk also authored The Spiral Dance and The Fifth Sacred Thing, among others.) Fais Do Do Ballroom, 5253 W. Adams Blvd.; Sat., Dec. 17, noon-6:30 p.m.; events range from $20-$50; email info@projectbutterfly.org; register at https://starhawk.eventbrite.com
