Kat Jones didn’t set out to reinvent public relations, she just wanted to work with the things she loved: stories, characters, and the fandoms that fuel them. Two decades later, she’s become one of the most influential figures quietly shaping how entertainment, digital media, creator, and gaming brands talk to the world.

Her career began at Marvel Entertainment, just as Iron Man was about to launch what would become one of the most successful film universes in the world. From there, she embedded herself in the evolving worlds of digital media and gaming, from early YouTube culture at Machinima, to the rise of livestreaming at Azubu, to the digital empire-building years at DEFY Media, where she served as VP of Communications.

Those experiences would eventually lead her to found Motiv, a boutique communications agency that’s become a go-to partner for creators, studios, and fan-centric brands looking to make an impact in a hyper-connected world.

Where Fandom Meets Strategy

Ask Jones what inspired her to launch Motiv, and she’ll tell you it started with obsession – the kind only a true fan can relate to.

“I’d see a billboard for a show or movie I loved, and my mind would instantly start running PR ideas – how I’d tell that story, what the strategy would look like, who I’d reach out to, what angles would inspire people to care,” she says. “That’s when I realized, I shouldn’t just be consuming pop culture, I should be helping shape it.”

That fan-first instinct has become Motiv’s signature. The agency blends strategic precision with genuine enthusiasm, a rare balance in an industry often driven by metrics more than meaning. It’s PR with a pulse, and it’s that approach that has her working with some of the biggest (and most fun) names in the industry, including Critical Role, Smosh, and Titmouse Animation, to name a few.

Evolving With the Industry

Jones’ résumé reads like a map of the modern media revolution: geek culture, creator economy, gaming livestreaming, digital-first content. “The same strategies that worked just a few years ago don’t anymore,” she says. “Press releases are the last thing that’s going to move the needle. You need thoughtful, engaging stories, community, and emotional resonance.”

That’s exactly where Jones thrives, in the space between creativity and credibility. At Motiv, her team integrates PR, digital storytelling, influencer partnerships, events marketing, and social strategy into one seamless narrative. “PR isn’t a single lane anymore,” she says. “It’s a whole ecosystem.”

Leading With Authenticity

Jones’ secret weapon isn’t just her expertise, it’s her authenticity. “My quirks built my career,” she says with a grin. “For a long time, I thought I had to be polished and buttoned-up to be taken seriously. But the minute I stopped self-editing, everything clicked. I show up exactly as I am, and it attracts exactly what I need.”

That unapologetic energy defines both her agency and her leadership style. She’s deeply hands-on with clients, choosing quality over quantity and collaboration over hierarchy. “I’ll never take on a client unless I know we can deliver for them,” she says. “But we don’t say ‘no’ — we say, ‘let’s try something else.’”

In an era where AI is generating headlines and social media dictates perception, Kat Jones is proving that human connection – passion, humor, curiosity, and a little bit of weirdness – is still the most powerful communications tool there is.
