Record heat struck Southern California on this fall Friday, and that can only mean one thing:

People are going out and drinking tonight.  You know this.

Just beware: The Los Angeles Police Department and other agencies are on the hunt for drunk drivers. The LAPD says giving you details about its crackdown might dissuade you from getting behind the wheel after one too many. Cheers to that.

Here are the details:

–Tonight from 6 p.m. to midnight a checkpoint will be awaiting your arrival on Central Avenue at 81st Street in a part of L.A. that's at the heart of an ongoing gang war (really).

–Tonight from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. the LAPD will have extra cops on the streets of its Olympic Division area, which includes most of Koreatown, part of Mid-City, and communities such as Harvard Heights and the Byzantine-Latino Quarter. There are never any drunk people here. The department calls this kind of operation a DUI “saturation patrol.”

–Tonight from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. there will be a checkpoint expecting you on Figueroa and Ninth streets near Staples Center and LA Live. By encouraging an alcohol-intensive entertainment district and then policing it, City Hall is getting paid.

–Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. a checkpoint will be up and running on Van Nuys Boulevard and Kewen Avenue in picturesque Pacoima.

–Sunday from 4 p.m. to midnight a DUI saturation patrol will be looking for football fans and other drinkers in the LAPD Topanga Division area of the Valley. Don't get sacked.
