Updated at the bottom: The skateboarder died.

Mix speed, a skateboard and alleged drunk driving and you probably have a recipe for hospitalization.

Authorities say a skateboarder being towed by a suspected DUI driver crashed and ended up hospitalized with critical injuries over the weekend.

The accident involving “hot boarding” — a sport where skateboarders are towed behind moving cars — happened in Santa Clarita on Cedarfalls Drive about 5 p.m Saturday, according to L.A. County Sheriff's officials.

The skater, 35-year-old Edward Culhane, was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial hospital in critical condition.

The driver, Ryan Howell, 33, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI, deputies said.

It's not the first time this spring that hot boarding has led to critical injury. It also happened April 1 in San Diego's Ocean Beach community when a rider let go of a tow rope and careened into an oncoming car.

We're big fans of the incredible gymnastics in contemporary skateboarding. But this is just stupid.

Update: Culhane died from his injuries, sheriff's officials announced Tuesday.

Now they're looking for witnesses. Anyone who saw the “hot boarding” was asked to call Det. Jeff Maag at 661-255-1121.
