Homegirl Cafe, the successful downtown enterprise operated by the gang-intervention group Homeboy Industries, is aiming for a concession at LAX, the nonprofit organization announced this week.

Homegirl has paired up with airport concessions company Areas USA in its existing bid to secure a food-and-beverage outlet. “This partnership with Areas USA gives Homeboy Industries a unique chance to expose airport travelers to some wonderfully unique food and, at the same time, promote our organization's programs,” said Homeboy founder and Father Gregory Boyle.

Homegirl serves up “Latina flavors with a contemporary twist” and boasts that it uses fresh, local ingredients from area gardens for its salads, salsas and pestos. The LAX location will serve “Mexican favorites,” sandwiches and pastries from the Homeboy Bakery.
