Hollywood pool season has been extended through October.

No, we're not talking about alcohol-fueled day parties that bring out the bikinis and board shorts. We're talking about the people's pool at the  Hollywood Recreation Center.

Area City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell and the L.A. Department of Recreation and Parks announced today that you can be lapping and splashing at the new venue for two additional months this year — through Oct. 25.

The pool normally closes after Labor Day Weekend (which is Sept. 5-7 this year).

But O'Farrell's office says he and the parks people dug deep in their pockets and found the extra cash to extend the pool's 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. days until Halloween season.

It will only take an extra $40,250 for the staffing, utilities, maintenance and supervision required to extend Hollywood pool season, O'Farrell's people say. That's pocket change to City Hall.

This is the best idea ever.

It seems that, maybe as a result of global warming, or maybe just because a warm-water El Niño has been simmering in the Pacific, summer this year started early and shows no signs of stopping.

The Hollywood facility was rebuilt and then rededicated last month, O'Farrell's office says.

It features a water slide, shaded bleachers, low-water landscaping and, best of all, $3.50 admission for those ages 18 to 64 and $1 admission for kids under 17 and for seniors 65 and older.

“I really want my constituents to enjoy the waning summer months in this beautifully renovated, city-owned facility,” O’Farrell says. “I am thrilled to partner with the department to provide greater accessibility to parks and more recreational options for all Angelenos.”
