New Year's Eve is the ultimate amateur night when it comes to partying. So don't be a sucker and end up in jail because you picked the worst time of year to drink one too many and get behind the wheel.

L.A. area authorities will be looking for you easy prey. But at least they're giving you “fair warning,” in the words of the Los Angeles Police Department, about where they'll be, and when they'll be there. The idea, police have long said, is that if you know they're out there looking, you'll be less likely to drink and drive.

Here, then, is what we know about the huge finale of holiday DUI operations in the L.A. area:

]

-Tonight from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. the LAPD will be running a DUI checkpoint at Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue near Marina del Rey.

-Tonight from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. there will be a DUI checkpoint somewhere (officials are not saying exactly where) in the city off Alhambra.

-Tonight from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. extra patrol cops will be searching for drunk drivers in the city of Santa Monica.

-Tonight from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. there will be extra patrol officers on the streets hunting for inebriated motorists in the city of Glendale.

-Tonight from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. a similar DUI saturation patrol will be happening on the streets of Gardena.

-Tonight a California Highway Patrol “DUI Task Force Strike Team” will be hitting the greater Westside of L.A.

-Tonight a multi-agency “Strike Team” will be looking for DUI motorists in the South Bay.

-Tonight there will be DUI patrols—extra cops on the streets searching for drunk drivers—in Culver City, Burbank, Pomona, San Gabriel, Torrance and Santa Clarita.

Be safe.
