Historian Mary Adams Urashima discusses one of the first Japanese-American communities on the West Coast in her new book, Historic Wintersburg in Huntington Beach. The rural community in north Huntington Beach was settled by Japanese immigrants in the early 19th century prior to the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII. The neighborhood was once considered the hub of Japanese-American life in Orange County, and is home to the oldest Japanese church in the county built in 1910. After it was incorporated into Huntington Beach in 1957, the village has become largely forgotten, with only six surviving original buildings.
