In the past few years many new cannabinoids have been catapulted into the limelight. HHC is the latest and we want to give you the deets on this new compound. Read ahead to find out about the effects HHC has on the mind and body, plus we’ll fill you in on where to score it.

What is HHC?

Before we jump into it, just so you know, we are on the brink of briefly emerging ourselves into the world of chemistry. The facts are super key here, so we’re gonna make it as easy as we can for you to effortlessly follow!

Hexahydrocannabinal or HHC is a phytocannabinoid that is naturally occurring in very trace amounts. But, we can make Hot Heavy Cannabis its official non-technical name, okay?

We traced it all the way back to 1944 where it was found by Roger Adams, an American chemist. He also happened to be the first fellow to isolate and identify CBD and a whole lot of other useful cool stuff.

To find HHC, he ingeniously added hydrogen molecules to naturally occuring Delta 9 THC compounds found in cannabis sativa.

This process is known as hydrogenation. It enables the conversion of THC into HHC by breaking the double bond in the Delta 9 compound and replacing it with hydrogen.

According to a blog post on the National Cannabis Industry Association website, the major benefit to hydrogenation of cannabinoids, as far as we know, is the stability they maintain at a molecular level, as well as its resistance to UV light and heat. Due to this, HHC has a longer shelf life than THC.

HHC In 2021

In order to supply HHC to the beautiful people of the world, it is mostly manufactured in highly technical laboratory settings. Again for reason being that there simply isn’t enough of this stuff naturally occuring on cannabis plants to go around.

The current method being used is a multi-layered process that involves CBD extraction from raw hemp. The CBD extract is distilled and later isolated into powder form. While this sounds fairly simple, the process beyond this point is where it gets seriously technical.

In one of Max Savage Levenson’s latest Leafly articles, he spoke with Colorado Chromatography about their process in creating HHC. He quotes the chief operating officer, Kyle Ray, as describing the HHC manufacturing process as, “…a proprietary process that takes place inside a chemical reactor…think about the reactor as a black box…in goes CBD, out comes HHC.”

Ray goes on to advise that, although it is safe to create HHC in a well-equipped and sterile lab, there is still high risk involved with potential for explosions. In that regard, DIY enthusiasts of cannabis culture, please pass on this project. This one is for professional chemists like our main man, Roger Adams.

What Are The Effects Of HHC On The Body And Mind?

Now this is where we get into what you’re probably dying to find out. But the effects of HHC on the body and mind are reportedly varied at best due to the fact that not a lot of folks have experience with it.

HHC is still fairly new to the market and it is more than possible that most of the canna-curious folks out there don’t know it exists. And even if they do know it exists, they may not be able to find it.

Nonetheless, word out on the street and more so according to Barely Legal Hemp, HHC offers benefits comparable to Delta-8 THC. It is described as slightly less potent, yet it offers impressive sensory experiences.

They claim that users report an exemplary chill high with a calming cerebral experience. Others report feeling physically relaxed and their perception of pain or soreness decreases. Some have also asserted that HHC works to eliminate symptoms of nausea.
