One of the most horrific crimes of the summer just got the worst news: 59-year-old Heunae Chang, whom cops say was set on fire by her son late last month, has died, the LAPD announced.

The crime happened in a nice community called Santiago Estates in the hills above Sylmar nearly two weekends ago, on Aug. 25, according to the department.

… the attack was discovered about 4 a.m. in the 12000 block of Via Santa Marta after cops responded to a report of arson.

According to the LAPD:

When they arrived they found the victim suffering from severe burns. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel transported the victim to a local hospital in grave condition …

Officers arrested 25-year-old Phillip Chang, who lived at the house, on-the-spot, police said. He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and jailed in lieu of $1 million.

LAPD Officer Richard French confirmed to the Weekly that the suspect is the victim's son. He said police will now also likely recommend a charge of murder.
