A speed trap is typically defined as a hidden stretch of road that police equipped with radar guns use to catch people speeding.

The website CheapCarInsurance states that it recently “analyzed 15 years of driver-reported National Speed Trap Exchange data” to come up with a list of the American cities with the most reported speed traps.

The site's California list was dominated by SoCal cities.

Orange County's Brea topped the state list with about 78 speed traps reported per 100,000 residents, the analysis found.

Danville (about 67 per 100,000) was second. After that, the California top nine is all about SoCal.

Pasadena, third statewide (64 per 100,000), was the top-ranking speed trap city in Los Angeles County.

Diamond Bar in L.A. County (about 57 per 100,000) came in seventh in California. Cypress in Orange County (55 per 100,000) came in eighth. Rancho Palos Verdes in L.A. County (about 52 per 100,000) rounded out the state list of nine.

Sarasota, Florida, was deemed to be the worst speed trap city in America. CheapCarInsurance says it had about 142 speed traps per 100,000 residents.

No California city made the national top 20.

“While L.A. is home to the worst road rage in the nation, [our] study finds that neighboring towns Pasadena, Diamond Bar and Rancho Palos Verdes all rank as [some of] California's worst cities for speed traps,” a spokeswoman for the site said.

So, uh, simmer down now. You never know: A cop could be waiting for you around that next corner.
