Due to various benefits, hemp products are gaining popularity. In oil and powder form, hemp seeds are a nutritional powerhouse. Increased use of hemp as a food item is also revealing its allergenic potential. The human body is theoretically allergic to all foods. Peanuts, soy, milk, wheat and fish are common allergens. Hemp food allergies are common. It is crucial to determine if our body’s allergy is a reaction to hemp or another chemical.

Defining Allergies

Food allergies are an immunological response to a protein or pollen in food. The body identifies harmless substances as threats and stops them. Each immune system reacts to allergens differently. Humans can be allergic to any food. Research suggests humans are more allergic to high-protein foods.

Hemp Allergen

Hemp seeds are protein-rich. Hemp protein provides all necessary amino acids in amounts closer to full protein sources. 100g of hemp seeds provide 34g of protein. This is more protein than usual and can cause obvious physiological reactions.

Hemp-Related Allergies

  • Sneezing
  • Rhinitis
  • Cough and itchy throat
  • Redness of the eye
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Itchy, swollen skin
  • Hemp pollen can also trigger asthma and conjunctivitis

Which Hemp Parts Cause Allergies?

Pollen is discharged by trees, grasses, and weeds to fertilize neighboring plant seeds. Theoretically, every plant element can cause an allergic reaction. Protein- or pollen-rich portions are the most likely culprits. If you’re allergic to hemp seeds, you’ll probably react to hemp seed-based items. Hemp milk, hearts, and powder are examples.

Hemp seed oil isn’t allergenic. 100% fat hemp oil is processed. Hemp oil may induce some of the symptoms below, depending on a person’s biochemistry.

Common Hemp Allergy Symptoms

  • Eye irritation: itching, edema, and puffiness.
  • Hives: rash, plaques, or pale red lumps.
  • Allergic Rhinitis: sneezing, runny nose, congestion.
  • Asthma: breathing trouble, chest tightness, impaired lung function.
  • Conjunctivitis: pink/red/bloodshot eyes.
  • Anaphylaxis: rash, nausea, vomiting, breathing trouble, shock.

It’s possible to eliminate hemp allergy symptoms naturally and with medicine. Ice packs can reduce skin inflammation and pink eye. Extra caution is needed for asthma or anaphylaxis. Treatment usually involves antihistamines and steroids. These should only be consumed by a doctor. If there are serious symptoms, doctors may run tests on you. A hemp allergy test is usually skin-based. A skin prick test determines allergy sensitivity.

Also, the doctor performs an allergen-specific blood test to confirm the patient’s allergy. A positive skin prick test doesn’t always imply an allergy. Doctors must compare skin prick testing to patient symptoms over time.
