Culture PickHarvey Fierstein is best known as an actor, playwright and screenwriter, with a dynamic presence and distinctively throaty cadence and charisma. From Torch Song Trilogy to Kinky Boots on stage and Mrs. Doubtfire to Independence Day on film, he’s got quite the career. As a gay rights activist he’s been equally bold and impactful on culture. With his new book I Was Better Last Night (Penguin/Random House), the thespian sheds new light on his life and experiences. According to Fierstein, many of the tales in it –covering sex and romance, personal struggles and showbiz tea– have never been heard before. The memoir will be the topic of discussion at this unique event held at the beautiful First Congregational Church of Los Angeles in Downtown (known for its open-approach and gay wedding services). Emmy-nominated actor Billy Eichner will conduct the Q&A, and Fierstein has said on his social media that the pair will also discuss the new film BROS– the first major studio film to feature an all LGBTQ cast playing all heterosexual roles.  The event is presented by Book Soup. Tickets include entry and one hard cover copy of I Was Better Last Night: A Memoir and a signed bookplate. Those who already bought the book can pay general admission only. Sat., April 9. Doors at 11:30am; event at Noon. First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, 540 S Commonwealth Ave. More info at www.booksoup.com
