72-Year-Old Woman Arrested after Car Accident near Carnuel

CARNUEL, NM (December 2, 2021) – Friday night, Harold McCarty was killed and Cheryl Stiles was arrested after a car crash on Interstate 40.

Police responded to the scene around 6:30 p.m., after receiving multiple dispatch calls in the area.

Per reports, Stiles was heading east on the highway when she struck another vehicle while changing lanes. Upon impact, Stiles’ vehicle flipped over.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased victim was later identified as Harold McCarty.

The surrounding area was closed for a brief time during cleanup and preliminary duties. Although, the road has since reopened.

Stiles had told authorities that she had two drinks prior to driving, and refused to take a sobriety test. She was being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

New information shows that Stiles has since been charged with homicide by vehicle and DWI.
