Deals: There is a range of drinks at this Silver Lake gastropub, including three beer-and-shot combos from $8 to $10. Tall glasses of Pabst Blue Ribbon at $3; house wines at $4; well cocktails at $5. Bottled beers are $4 and beers on draft range from $5 to $7. Seven food options, including chicken wings, steak lettuce cups and French fries, are $3 to $8.

Vibe: At some bars, happy hours bring in patrons. It seems the other way around at Hyperion Public, located on a busy strip of the avenue it's named after. The menu certainly reads as if its guests had a hand in its creation. There are more drink options than house reds/whites and well cocktails, reflective of what must be the preferences of bar regulars. There are $3 tall boys of PBR, for instance, alongside Stone IPA for two dollars more.

Music runs a similarly particular gamut — one minute it's The Wallflowers, the next it's Tupac's “Keep Ya Head Up,” then The Commodores — perhaps familiar most to regulars. Then there are the food options: four out of seven are affixed with “happy” at the beginning of the dish's name. So it's not just wings and crab cakes; it's happy wings and happy crab cakes. Prepare to set aside at least a 15-20 minute wait for the latter, by the way, whereas orders of turkey sliders and happy deviled eggs will arrive minutes after your order.

Around peak hours in the late afternoon, this part of Hyperion Avenue will see stop-and-go traffic headed towards the I-5. If you're around the area, it might make sense to wait out the crush of cars.

Happy hour is available only at the dimly-lit bar, which is up a short flight of stairs at the back of the restaurant.
