Happy Hour: Biergarten in Koreatown

Place: Biergarten, 206 N. Western Ave., Los Angeles; (323) 466-4860.

Hours: Weekdays 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., excluding holidays.

Deal: A one-page menu with deals on beer pints and bar bites priced between $3.50 to $7.50, including German fried rice for $7 and sizable wursts (knack, brat and bock) at $7 each.

Vibe: Biergarten is a sports pub at the edge of Koreatown. The giant screen affixed to the main wall says as much. These days it's pretty much tuned in to the NBA playoffs, but side screens might be airing a middleweight boxing match or a NASCAR race.

Whereas the space is American in sensibility, the menu is equal parts German and Korean. A kolbasa will arrive on a hot plate with kimchi sauerkraut and a mild mustard. The fried rice is stir-fried with chopped bockwurst, then topped with a brown gravy made of the German lager Spaten Dunkel. The kimchi pancakes ($5.50) come in a set of four, all silver dollar-sized and dressed with gochujang aioli, frisée, and green onions. There are a handful of options — pints of Hoegaarden and Spaten Optimator — which you'll likely stick with.

Since opening in 2010, the pub has been a preferred spot for sports-watching, especially on days of major sporting events. Consider your ESPN needs well-tended here.
