It took a while, but it's going to happen.

You can finally hail an UberX ride at LAX, an Uber spokesman confirmed today.

Pickups will take place on the upper, departure level starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow, he said.

UberX was beat to the punch by Lyft by nearly a month. The ride-hailing competitor was approved to pick up passengers starting Dec. 23.

Uber was slower in applying for pick-ups, LAX officials said, with Lyft completing volleys of paperwork much earlier. Ride-hailing companies could drop off at the airport previously.

In a statement, LAX officials called UberX's arrival “a key milestone” in improving passenger services at one of the busiest airports in the nation.

“We are bringing LAX passengers what they have been asking for — better access to reliable, convenient transportation from the airport. Tomorrow, those options expand dramatically with the arrival of UberX,” said L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti. “As we invest billions to make LAX one of the world’s great airports — and welcome more travelers than ever before — my administration is ensuring the best experience possible for all our visitors.”

Ride-hailing apps will have to pay taxpayers $4 per passenger pickup. There are also limits to how many vehicles they can make available for pickup at one time.

“L.A. is continuing to lead the way in passenger convenience by allowing ride-hailing companies to operate at LAX,” said Councilman Mike Bonin, who represents LAX and nearby neighborhoods on the City Council. “Ride-hailing companies like Uber add more options for passengers, making it easier and more convenient to get to and from the airport. The agreement negotiated by the Board of Airport Commissioners protects nearby neighborhoods with technology that prevents drivers from parking on their streets while they wait for calls. This is great news for both passengers and neighborhoods.”

Uber's Black cars are essentially permitted limousines that were already allowed to pick up at the airport.
