A trio of gangsta rappers in a Mercedes-Benz appeared to have stalked a Los Angeles Police Department officer downtown and displayed a weapon inside the vehicle as a cop stood outside his patrol vehicle.

Video of the scene was posted on Instagram, and police have tracked down at least two of the three involved, they announced today. One suspect was taken into custody on unrelated warrants, said Officer Drake Madison. Today Chief Charlie Beck called that man a “secondary suspect.”

Another was expected to turn himself in, Madison told us. Beck called him a “primary suspect.”

The clip apparently was produced to promote the planned comeback of Latino hip-hop act Brownside, which was originally assembled by Eazy-E in 1994. The Mercedes in the Instagram appears to us to be similar to one seen in this video, titled “Brownside — The Reintroduction.”

The group is promoting a single, “Till the Casket Drops.”

If you don't think LAPD has a sense of humor, catch the dry wit in this statement today:

The investigation revealed that the film was made by members of an early-1990s rap group no longer in fashion.

Cops believe the video was made for entertainment and did not pose a “credible threat” to the officer in question. Investigators were made aware of the video on Oct. 1, police said.

The LAPD, including Chief Beck, would not identify the suspect in custody despite a state mandate that such information be made public. (The department's own guidelines say that such IDs should be released.)

Madison said the suspect was collared based on unrelated warrants.

One other suspect, believed to be the man holding the weapon, was sought by a SWAT team in Downey, which apparently came up short. He was wanted based on “a felony arrest warrant … for carrying a firearm in a vehicle with a prior [conviction],” LAPD said in a statement.

According to our reading of LAPD's cryptic information on this case, he's the one who might turn himself in.

The investigation, handled by the department's elite Robbery-Homicide Division, was ongoing.
