Guisados, the king of taco joints, is cautiously stepping into the breakfast game. For the past few weeks on various weekend mornings, they've been open at both their Boyle Heights and Echo Park locations serving breakfast. The first run, on the Fourth of July, offered 50-cent tacos. This week marks the third test run, and both shops will be open from 8-11 a.m. on Sunday. (Though the tacos are no longer 50 cents — sorry!)

What does a Guisados breakfast look like? “We tried to stay true to our concept, which is that this is all food we would eat at home,” Armando De La Torre Jr. tells us. So that means egg tacos with all kinds of fun additions: cheese, sausage, chorizo, jamon. They even offer “weenie,” which we assume is hot dogs and which sounds awesome.

There's also a coffee component, with iced coffee available, as well as horchata with Stumptown cold-brewed coffee. 

Over the past few weeks they've been refining the menu, figuring out what people like and don't like. For instance, up until now they've been using flour tortillas for the breakfast tacos. “We found that people really love us for our tortillas, our corn tortillas,” De La Torre says. So this weekend will be the first time serving on Guisados original corn tortillas. 

All of this is in preparation for the new downtown location of Guisados, which should open soon. At that point, they'd like to be serving breakfast daily in the downtown location. Boyle Heights and Echo Park will have breakfast hours as well, but only on weekends.
