A 29-year-old man jumped to his death in front of shocked shoppers at a Grove shopping center parking structure in the Fairfax District last night, police said.
It was a busy day at the center, and some Twitter users reported that Justin Bieber sightings had caused some commotion earlier in the day. The suicide was reported at 7:29 p.m., according to an L.A. Fire Department statement.
According to the LAPD, reports of shots fired before the suicide were untrue:
The unidentified man jumped from the seventh floor of the eight-story parking structure of the mall, which is next to the Farmers Market at Beverly Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. There was no shooting, cops said.
There were news reports that the man was with friends when he jumped.
Later in the evening The Grove issued this statement:
We are so saddened by the young man's death tonight. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
Twitter was abuzz with news of the death at the popular mall:

@Dustondo seriously. So glad I saw it first before my kids and rushed them in the opposite direction

At the grove today and got off the elevator right after someone committed suicide. Thank goodness my daughters didn't see
