When great white sharks were spotted off the Southern California coast in June it seemed a little unusual, but experts say it's not: It turns out that — hold on to your boardshorts — great whites often call Los Angeles coastal waters home sweet home.

Indeed, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has tagged and tracked the critters and finds that they like to hang out in the waters off Will Rogers State Beach and Malibu as they migrate to Baja California, according to the Daily Breeze. The sharks' offspring also seem to call the Santa Monica Bay and other local coastal waters their childhood home.

States the Breeze:

Based on tracking data, sharks are swimming through waters from Santa Barbara south to Mexico, said Ken Peterson, a Monterey Bay Aquarium spokesman.
