Update at 1:51 p.m: City News Service reports that the whale has been freed by rescuers. First posted at 11:53 a.m.

A gray whale became entangled off Redondo Beach today, according to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

Rescuers were headed to the mammal in an attempt to free it for the second time in two days, apparently.

The whale first became entangled …

… in netting and a fishing buoy off the between Laguna Beach and Dana Point yesterday, according to City News Service and reports.

It's not clear if it's still entangled in the same gear or if it got caught up in another situation.

Rescuers were aiming for the whale last night but called off the effort as a result of rough conditions, according to this report.

On Saturday another whale reportedly became entangled in a gill net but was freed only to possibly be found dead later.
