Grace Jones Pulls Up to the Hollywood Bowl: Powerhouse singer and actress Grace Jones may have seen her greatest success in the ‘80s thanks to classics like “Pull Up to the Bumper,” but she’s retained an enviable level of artistic respect. Putting her on a bill with young Scottish synth-pop band CHVRCHES is inspired. Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul are also on the bill.

According to the Hollywood Bowl, “With hits like ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ and ‘Pull Up to the Bumper,’ the brilliantly forward-thinking icon Grace Jones helped to define the sound of glam-pop. CHVRCHES’ massive washes of synth and Lauren Mayberry’s soaring voice were made to fill huge spaces with huge emotions. And Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul are ripping up the dance floor’s rule book, taking on racism, colonialism, and more while keeping the beat pumping.”

In the LA Weekly back in 2009, Randall Roberts wrote of Jones, “She is, and always has been, the Other, a transcultural singer and performer whose post-disco work in the late 1970s and 1980s merged bass-heavy Jamaican dub, grooving New York City dance music, funky British post-punk and even a little French chanson to create a sound that’s as sturdy and vital today as when it arrived.”
