Under a humorous veneer, Spanish painter Francisco de Goya viciously skewered public myopia and fascination with witchcraft, as well as corruption in religion and government. In 80 prints known as Los Caprichos, Goya attacked the Spanish Inquisition and other late 18th-century social and political abuses, subject matters and an approach that still holds currency for the four choreographers — Licia Perea, Juanita Suarez, Eva Tessler and Eluzo Santos — who make up the Latina Dance Project. LDP's latest, The Slumber of Reason, pays homage with an evening of 10 episodes re-creating Goya's era, laced with passionate attacks on contemporary ignorance and exploitation, all lightly swathed in Goya-esque humor.
