A sick LAX traveler who had been to West Africa was hospitalized and tested for Ebola as a precaution last week.

Today Centinela Hospital Medical Center's CEO Linda Bradley said the patient's tests came back negative. “The patient has been approved for discharge with no further evaluation needed,” the hospital said in a statement.

L.A. County interim health chief Jeffrey Gunzenhauser said last week that the man was “not a suspected case” but that LAX-based workers who flagged him and called an ambulance were correct in being cautious:

The patient had been to Liberia and he was sick, although Gunzenhauser said his symptoms did not match those associated with Ebola.

Perhaps the best-known of those symptoms is having a fever.

Nonetheless the man who arrived at LAX on the night of Oct. 7 from an undisclosed city was rushed to the Inglewood hospital, isolated and subjected to a battery of tests.

The airport does not have direct flights to and from West Africa, but connecting flights can bring travelers from that region to the sixth busiest airport in the world.

Centinela Hospital stated today that the patient “has undergone all necessary testing consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines.”

Hospital CEO Bradley said:

The patient who we were informed had traveled recently from Liberia underwent numerous tests which all came back negative.

L.A. County Department of Public Health officials said that seven other patients in the county have been tested for Ebola since December, with no positives reported.
