34-Year-Old Driver Dies in Deadly Head-On Collision near 16th Street
PHOENIX, AZ (June 15, 2023) – Early Monday morning, police responded to a head-on crash that claimed the life of Goliath Cortez. The incident took place near 16th and Elwood Streets at around 4:30 a.m., June 5th. According to Sergeant Melissa Soliz, a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Cortez and a pick-up truck occupied by two people were involved in the incident. Upon investigation, the officers learned that Cortez was headed south on 16th Street when he veered northbound and collided with the pick-up. Furthermore, Cortez suffered serious injuries and first responders transported him to the hospital where he later died. Meanwhile, the driver and the passenger of the pick-up suffered minor injuries and were also given treatment. At this time, it was unknown why Cortez veered over to the opposite lane. Consequently, Cortez was tested for impairment and the results are pending.
