Here's a bittersweet hero's story to begin what's shaping up to be one downright chilly President's Day in Los Angeles.

As we reported last week, L.A. city firefighter Glen Allen died around noontime Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after he was chainsawed out from under the roof of a burning Hollywood Hills mansion. After 38 years at the L.A. Fire Department, 61-year-old Allen was planning to retire within the next year.

But in an even more tragic twist of timing, CBS2 reports that the firefighter's daughter gave birth to a 6-pound-7-ounce baby boy…

… on Saturday night, just one day after the soon-to-be grandfather was declared dead.

Allen was standing on the roof of a 6,000-square-foot mansion in Dane Cook's Sunset Plaza neighborhood when, according to L.A. Fire Captain Jaime Moore, the area between the roof and the ceiling became so soaked with water escaping from a burned-through sprinkler pipe, that the top of the house caved in. From the Weekly's original report:

In order to pull him out from under the rubble, his fellow firefighters resorted to using a chainsaw. The veteran's pulse actually stopped for a moment, L.A. Fire Department officials say, but was “resuscitated at the scene and rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in grave condition” [KTLA].

Four of his colleagues, including one with a broken ankle, joined him there — but have since been released.

Though the multimillion-dollar house was originally reported as a former residence of (debatably) funny man Dane Cook, he quickly Tweeted that the mansion actually belonged to a neighbor. From there on out, he was following the story closely; @danecook said on Friday:

A natural gas-fueled fireplace may have sparked the blaze around 11:30, while residents were sleeping. It then spread to the attic, where it seared through the sprinkler pipe and caused multiple L.A. County and city firefighters to crash through the roof.

The fire was finally tamed after two-plus hours, six injuries and $250,000 in damage.

According to CBS2, Allen's memorial is planned for week's end:

Funeral services will be held Friday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels for Los Angeles city firefighter Glenn Allen, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
